#MdAPA2022 CME Conference Highlights

MdAPA welcomed 282 attendees including PAs and PA students to Ocean City, MD, last week for 29 CME sessions and workshops for both PAs and PA students.   We were excited to include a Leadership Track again this year that featured some of the leaders in the industry in PA leadership. We also partnered with PALLA (Physician Assistant Leadership and Learning Academy) to share information on how their mission, to advance PA education, research, and policy in Maryland can benefit all PAs in MD.

Our new check-in and conference app was introduced to streamline the speaker surveys and your CME certificate process.  This was a great way to use technology to help conference attendees create their own schedules and to easily evaluate sessions in real time.  The new registration system helped the check in process and allowed us to take “attendance” each day to be in compliance with AAPA guidelines.

Friday night’s Trivia Competition came down to a head to head competition between PAs and PA students!  This will quickly become a MdAPA Conference Tradition.  Young and old enjoyed the questions and had fun taunting each other.  After a long day of learning, it was fun to have a friendly competition involving pop culture trivia and music.

The annual membership meeting was held on Saturday afternoon with the transition of the 2021-2022 board to the 2022-2023 board.  Tim Sparta opened the meeting with a crack of his new gavel.  Board members gave reports and we also were able to meet the President's philanthropic choice this year, Diakonia. This organization helps families of the eastern shore with their food pantry, housing assistance and thrift store. Donations to the charity were provided through direct donations and the silent auction.  Thank you to all of you who donated and bid on the amazing Silent Auction Items.

Saturday night festivities started out with our newest student competition, The Tourniquet Challenge!  We had 16 students participate in a close race while showing off their medical skills and physical strength.  It was lots of fun to watch and we hope more students will participate next year!  Congratulations to the Frostburg PA Program team,  "Gold Standard"  who won the 2022 MdAPA Challenge Bowl!  They rode a hot streak to defeat seven other teams representing all four Maryland PA programs in a jeopardy-like contest of medical knowledge and reflexes. Attendees and Students alike celebrated the end of a great conference with a beach bonfire and smores.

A HUGE thank you to the exhibitors and sponsors that were showcased in the exhibit hall to share their products and services to help PAs in their daily work.  We could not put on a conference like this without their support.

Last but not least, we celebrated the career of Thom Kidd and recognized him for his years of dedication to MdAPA and the PA profession.  Thom will be retiring from medicine this March, but he has promised to help the CME committee next year and continue to improve on our conferences.  I personally can’t express my gratitude enough for Thom’s wisdom and encouragement  throughout the last 3 years working together on the CME Committee.  He truly is dedicated to the Maryland PA students and the profession as a whole.  We are happy to keep him roped into our team!!

Thank you to all of you who attended and we appreciate your feedback and suggestions.  We look forward to seeing you back again next year.
